We’ve all had that moment:
You see someone’s life, their joy, their beauty, their success, and something deep inside whispers, “I wish that was me.”
Sometimes it’s subtle; a passing comparison on Instagram.
Other times, it’s loud, a deep yearning to trade places with someone whose life looks shinier, smoother, or seemingly more perfect.
And then, in rare and strange moments… you get the wish.
You get the opportunity.
You live their life or something close to it.
And suddenly, it doesn’t fit. It chokes. It drains you.
You realize you’ve stepped into a script that wasn’t written for you.
This is the lesson:
God doesn’t bless copy-and-paste destinies.
He blesses originals, the life He authored for you.
The Irish Wish Moment
The film Irish Wish paints this perfectly.
A woman wishes she had someone else's life, and just like magic, she gets it.
The man. The status. The spotlight.
But it doesn’t take long before she realizes: this isn’t her joy. This isn’t her truth.
The glitter loses its glow.
The dream becomes a prison.
And the heart starts to whisper again, “I want my life back.”
Sound familiar?
Sometimes, We Don’t Get That Life Back Right Away
For some, the wrong wish reverses quickly, grace shows up, and things realign.
But for others… the anguish of wrong choices, wrong seasons, wrong alignments… can stretch for years.
Some live in regret for a decade before finding freedom again.
That’s why we must be discerning.
That’s why we must be careful what we wish for.
What You Have Is a Seed — Not a Curse
Too often, we abandon what we have because it doesn’t look like what someone else has.
But hear this:
What you have - your job, your family, your path, your quiet season - is not a punishment.
It’s a seed.
You don’t need their garden.
You need to water your own.
God is a multiplier.
Give Him your small, and He will make it mighty.
Give Him your “not enough,” and He’ll breathe life into it.
Stay with what He gave you.
Grow it. Shape it. Be faithful in it.
You will see Him make up even greater than what you once envied.
The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It
It’s an old saying, but it’s true.
The grass looks greener on the other side until you realize:
That green came with its own dirt.
Its own weeds.
Its own maintenance.
And sometimes?
It’s not even grass, just turf.
Don’t chase illusions.
Don’t envy filters.
Don’t forsake your garden because someone else’s is blooming.
Your lane, your life, your destiny, it is holy ground.
Ecclesiastes 6:9 (NLT)
“Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless — like chasing the wind.”
Final Thoughts
Comparison is a thief.
Regret is a slow poison.
But obedience, walking in your God-given identity, is where joy lives.
So next time you feel that tug to wish for someone else’s life, pause…
And thank God for yours.
Because your story — as imperfect and quiet and unfinished as it may seem — is the only one He’s breathing on right now.
Choose your portion.
Honor your soil.
And trust: the life God writes for you is always better than the one you’d script for yourself.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (MSG)
“Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own… He’s the one who will keep you on track.”
Have you ever wished for someone else’s life, only to realize your portion was the better one after all? Or maybe you’re in that in-between space now, unsure, comparing, waiting for clarity.
